I’m trying to install ubuntu on a usb drive. I’m not talking about liveusb or booting from usb. I want to install the os on a 256 Gb usb drive, so that it can be accessed as a portable system from any computer. Need a bootable usb to install it on a second usb stick. However I intend to use my computer as only Windows 11 pc.

My questions are:

  1. Should I unplug my Windows 11 SSD before I install the Ubuntu on a Usb stick? I read otherwise Ununtu will store the secure boot files in the Windows ESP partition.
  2. Will unplugging and plugging back Windows 11 drive cause any problem with the Windows installation?
  3. Ununtu supports secure boot as I read. However do I need to change the secure boot mode (curtently set to Windows only) or backup the keys? If yes, how?
  4. Do other variants of Ubuntu such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu also support Secure Boot?

Thanks.
