As the title says, I have 64GB (8x8GB) of ECC DDR3 1333 that came with a Mac Pro upgrade kit, but the people that I did the upgrade for only needed the CPU so they let me keep the RAM. At the moment, the only computer I have that takes DDR3 is my home server, but it uses an i7-3770, which refuses to work with ECC RAM. Since I’d hate for it to just sit there unused, what could i do with it? So far these are my ideas:
- Sell it for around 40-50 euros. I wouldn’t mind the money, but that’s a boring option.
- Build another server. Currently the i7-3770 server uses openmediavault to act both as a NAS and Docker host via the compose plugin, but my plan for the future would be to separate the two. So, build a NAS that takes ECC and put it in there, but i have no idea what kind of components i could use; so far the options i found are either i3 4th gen which have a decent price, but I’m afraid they might be a little underpowered if I want to, say, add 10Gbe down the line, Xeons, which are expensive and power hungry, or AMD FX chips, which… Yeah.
So, is the NAS thing doable? Am I wasting my time and should just sell them before they get less valuable? Or are there some other options i have not considered? If it helps with suggesting parts and where to find them, I am located in Italy. Thank you for reading and for any suggestions you may provide.
