Hello everyone,

So I bought a 4080 Super a few weeks ago to replace my 2070 Super, and suffered from my monitors shutting down on me (turning black) and sometimes coming back after a minute and sometimes dont come back till a hard reset. This wasn’t happening during heavy loads, but rather during normal operations (web browsing, etc).

Windows event viewer showed a nvlddmkm error with event id 14, followed by some event id 0s.

I’ve researched the error extensively and found many many references to it online, with many many different suggestions on how to fix it.

Here are some things I’ve tried that did not help:

  • nvidia drivers removal (DDU) and reinstall clean
  • Bios update (was really surprised to find my mobo bios was outdated and was sure that was the issue. it wasn’t.)
  • RGB related software - removed icue, aura, etc
  • Undervolting GPU
  • GFX monitoring software - removed msi afterburner
  • removed asus armoury crate
  • power management related options
  • turning off hardware acceleration in browser
  • switching browsers
  • played with different gfx bios options (enabling/disabling on cpu gfx, reBAR, etc)
  • reseating graphics card
  • reseating (and testing) RAM
  • different power cables for graphic card

None of the above helped.

What did help, you may be asking?

Changing the inputs my monitors were plugged into. They were all (two DPs one HDMI) plugged in one by the other, and the crashes stopped once I’ve spaced them out (move the HDMI to the standalone one on the second row, and spaced out the DP a bit).

I have no explanation as to why this matters, and I have not seen this solution referenced anywhere which is why I decided to write this post, hoping it will help some poor soul in the future.

These were difficult few weeks, but after about a week with 0 crashes I think I can safely say it is now solved.

You’re welcome!
