Hello,

I’ve been struggling with weird issues on a freshly built PC. The main issue is that every time my display configuration changes I get a +30 second freeze, with sound still playing in the background, but all displays freeze and PC takes no inputs during the freeze. So even if I were to type or move my mouse during the freeze, it is not registered after the PC unfucks itself.

Full list of components:

  • Gigabyte B650 GAMING X AX
  • AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE
  • G.Skill Flare X5 DDR5-6000 BK C30 DC - 64GB (32GB x 2)
  • ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16GB GDDR6X OC Edition
  • Samsung 990 EVO M.2 2 TB PCI Express 4.0 V-NAND TLC NVMe
  • Kingston M.2 2 TB SSD (Don’t have the exact model at hand)
  • Western Digital 3 TB HDD (Don’t have the exact model at hand)
  • Corsair RM850x 2021 edition

A few examples of the issue which are 100% reproducible:

  1. Freeze happens on every startup, shortly after booting to Windows. Usually it’s right after I get into the Windows login screen, but If I am quick I might get to desktop.
  2. I turn HDR off/on.
  3. I turn off a monitor.
  4. I change display settings in either Windows or Nvidia settings, resolution for example.
  5. Starting up a fullscreen game (proper fullscreen, not fullscreen windowed)

Outside of these types of scenarios where the display settings change, the PC seems to be working as expected regardless of what I am doing… Except for another problem, about which I am not sure if it’s “supposed” to be this shit or if there’s something actually wrong with my hardware. These issues are most prevalent when I am moving files around:

  1. The windows file explorer(?) seems generally slow/buggy.
  2. Occasionally the file explorer just straight up crashes and restarts.
  3. Occasionally the task bar search just doesn’t work, instead I get endless loading after typing “cmd” for example. This is fixed by killing the search process.

I’ve tested pretty much everything I can think of on my own:

  • Reinstalled every driver I can think of several times, tried different versions of them as well.
  • Tried with fresh installs of W11 and W10.
  • Tested with different monitors.
  • Tinkered around Windows settings for hours
  • Ran different tests/benchmarks, including but not limited to: Everything OCCT has to offer, windows memtest, furmark, Prime95 (not extensively).
  • Tested with 2 different BIOS versions.
  • Tested with EXPO on and off.
  • Tested both RAM sticks one at a time.
  • Tested both of the 4080 BIOSes (Quiet + Performance, or whatever they are called).
  • Disabled integrated GPU
  • Checked that all cables/components are correctly plugged in to the MOBO.
  • Many other things that I can’t remember from the top of my head.

I am quite confident that it’s a hardware issue, but it’s very hard to pinpoint the component due to all stress tests finishing without issues and zero performance issues during 4k 144hz gaming or other demanding tasks. Sadly the RMA period has already ended, since I was rather busy for a while after buying the components. Of course there’s always warranty, but that’s much more hassle than RMA, so I would ideally like to avoid sending individual components back one by one to find out what’s causing the issue.

I would love to hear potential fixes, ways to pinpoint the issues, and/or similar experiences. Or any help at all really. Please ask for any further information if you need to know something.
