I’ve been wracking my brain searching for a good reason someone I’d want to talk to would use a private number. The government, my university and my bank don’t use private numbers, my friends and family wouldn’t, I don’t see a reason why my housing institution would use it… Why would anyone trust anything coming from a private number? The only reason I can imagine is if you don’t want to be identified before someone takes the call, in which case you probably can’t be trusted.

Context: Last weekend, a private number called me a little past midnight, and I was with a friend and couldn’t be arsed to take a call at that moment so I swiped them away, and then they called me two more times. And afterwards the friend asked me who would be calling, and I concluded that since it was a private number, it couldn’t have been anyone worth talking to. But I might be wrong.
