So, I (24F) live with a roommate (25F), and we’ve been living together for about a year now. Everything’s generally been fine—except for one thing: she’s like super obsessed with cleaning.
I work long hours and don’t have the energy to clean up as much as I probably should, but I still tidy up after myself when I can. The thing is, every time I leave a dish or some crumbs in the kitchen for even a few hours, she freaks out and cleans it. She’ll literally wash my dishes, wipe down the counter, even put things away in the fridge. She says it’s just because she likes a “clean space,” but I find it so annoying. Like, I know how to clean up after myself, but it’s like she’s hovering all the time.
A few days ago, I made some dinner and left a couple of plates on the counter while I relaxed for a bit. I had planned to clean them up later that night, but I was really tired. My roommate came home and immediately started cleaning up, which I didn’t ask her to do. When I tried to stop her, she said it was “no big deal” and that she just wanted to make the kitchen “nice and clean.” I told her it was MY mess, and I’d handle it when I felt like it. She got all offended and said I was being rude, so I yelled at her and said she was overstepping and that I didn’t need her to mother me.
The thing is, she’s been acting weird ever since. She’s given me the cold shoulder, and it’s like the whole vibe in the apartment has shifted. I feel like I should be allowed to leave a dish out for a few hours without her making a big deal about it, but she keeps saying that I’m disrespecting the shared space.
AITA for yelling at her because she cleaned my mess without asking?
