I was thinking about how similar 100 gecs and Jacob Colliers most recent albums seem to be. They both start off with the thx intro and then descend into musical madness mixing in tons of different genres sometimes different genres within the same song. They’re both pretty experimental, they both have a pretty upbeat, goofy sorta style, both very technically impressive. And yet 10,000 gecs is almost universally praised while djesse vol 4 is very controversial and generally disliked. And I don’t think that’s like a hypocritical thing, i also like 10,000 gecs much more than djesse 4, i just find it interesting how the albums aim to do very similar things and one succeeds and the other fails to where they’re basically opposite of each others: 100 gecs was praised for its goofy style and Jacob collier was called corny, 100 gecs was fun and authentic and interesting while Jacob was boring “Disney” music which had nothing to say and had no soul. And I completely understand, but when watching Jacob colliers videos it seems hard to make the claim he had no soul when he looks so passionate and dedicated to music. It almost feels wrong saying that cause how could someone so passionate make something so seemingly soulless? I’m not a music critic or anything so I honestly don’t know lol I’m genuinely asking. Is it cause of how much Jacob colliers fans and the media gas him up that affected my listening experience? I just had too high expectations? What are y’all’s thoughts on this
