Hello,

I will be moving into a new flat shortly, however I won’t have my own line, instead I am given 1 singular port that connects from my flat to the main switch in the house, which is connected to the line. Basically the house is one giant network with multiple households/flas connected to it, plus IoT devices such as security cameras (fun!), naturally I want to isolate a network for personal use, but I won’t have access to the main switch/router, plus its probably a consumer router and I doubt it supports vLANs. Would buying another router and using the ethernet port as WAN connection be worth doing to isolate my devices from the rest on the network for extra security?

Also, this is where my knowledge ends, if I use VPN on a device in the “inner” network, would the traffic be encrypted while it forwards from my personal router to the house router to WAN? How would it work in this instance?

Background info: I know a bit about networking, but still more on the noob side.

Any tips would be helpful.

Thank you
