I think that every instance of openly atheist characters that I have seen in US literature, movie or TV series represented either a dangerous sociopath or some kind of deluded madman who only hurts himself (pretty much always men, now that I think of it). Most of the mentions of atheism on social networks I’ve seen seem to consider it some kind of mind disease.

Is this an accurate representation of how US culture sees atheism?
