Hey all,

Sadly we have to use Windows for work laptops (I am a dev in a huge pharma company) and I have a terrible software VPN that blocks nearly everything.

I have a VM host at work with tons of ram and cpu, so I created a VM on it running Ubuntu 24.04. Love it so much!!!

My needs:

  • Remote desktop access
    • Require constant clipboard from my host to my remote, this fails a lot with xRDP
    • Require persistent login, so if I disconnect please leave my session open
    • Require it to work on a ultrawide (no issue so far just adding it in case)
    • Can seem to use ssh and 3389 ports to connect (remember I have annoying software vpn)
  • I switch apps a lot, between vscode, pgadmin, dbeaver, terminal and firefox
  • Don’t really use the multi desktop workspace thing
  • I am fond of a dark mode

I have used xRDP and that was excellent until maybe an hour or so in, randomly, the clipboard stops working.

I disabled that and used native RDP, which is lovely, but my session logs out if I disconnect. Takes me about 10 minutes to get back to where I was with firefox and my other db admin tools.

I am currently using GNOME v46.0
