French cinema continues to draw on literary masterpieces, with a new adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, for which we finally know the face of Jean Valjean.

After the incredible success of The Count of Monte Cristo at the box office in 2024, the great classics of French literature are experiencing a resurgence of interest among French production companies. This trend is confirmed with the announcement of two new adaptations of Les Misérables planned for 2025, adding to an already long list of film and television transpositions of Victor Hugo’s monumental work.

On one side, we will have a project led by Vincent Lindon, and on the other a film by director Éric Besnard, entitled Jean Valjean. The cast of the latter already includes Bernard Campan in the role of Monseigneur Bienvenu, Isabelle Carré in that of Mademoiselle Baptistine, and Alexandra Lamy as a servant. Warner has just revealed the name of the actor who will play Jean Valjean.

The official X/Twitter account of Warner Bros. France revealed that the role of Jean Valjean has been given to Grégory Gadebois. The 48-year-old actor, a former resident of the Comédie Française, is mostly used for secondary roles, despite the fact that he won the César for Most Promising Actor in 2012 for his role as Tony in Angèle et Tony by Alix Delaporte.

Grégory Gadebois has been seen in Mon âme par toi guérie by François Dupeyron, J’accuse by Roman Polanski, and in Le Fil by Daniel Auteuil. The actor also won multiple awards for his performance in Des Fleurs pour Algernon, a moving play directed by Anne Kessler.
