What is jellyfin?
A opensource software to host your own content/media, i.e netflix equivalent with your own movies/content library.
Guide:
Step 1 : Install jellyfin from this link on your computer (this is called jellyfin server) , just follow the on screen instructions.
Step 2: open jellyfin from the system tray and share the folder which contains your media and setup an account, leave all the settings to default.
Step 3: On the device where you want to watch the content, typically your android tv or phone or tablet, install the client app
Step 4: if you are on same wifi, just open the app and you can see the discovered server click on it and enter the username and password details mentioned in step 2, that’s it you get to enjoy the content.
Benefits and personal backstory:
Very low or no friction to watch the content you have, read no reason to pay to streaming services for convenience.
Can set up this to all your family members they get to enjoy the movie without any efforts.
I have a laptop and a smart TV, smart tv is in the hall. It is a hassle to torrent directly on smart tv, so my old setup used to be to torrent on my laptop, transfer the movie to a hard disk and connect the hard disk to the tv. Obviously that is a lot of unnecessary friction.
Just checked jellyfin, the youtube tutorials of them showed burning movies from cds and remuxing it / compressing it using makemkv or handbrake and so many steps, these are necessary if you are getting the movie from the cds which is not required when you have torrents.
Realised it is an information that can be explained in a minute, hence sharing it here.
