Hello! I apologize if this is the wrong place to put all of this. I’ve been battling an issue for a few weeks now where my fps in games has been quite low, and my computer overall handles games poorly. My fps is very inconsistent and stutters in every game I play. Fortnite I use mainly as a benchmark, and I’ll get anywhere between 40–90 fps at low to medium graphic settings at 1080P using DLSS balanced or performance without a change. The results are similar to almost every other game I play or run on my system. Black ops 6 at medium graphics settings at 1080P and DLSS quality or balanced. Bf2042 runs around 50 similarly. With all low settings. My audio also ‘crackles’ and ‘pops’ when playing games.
System specs: MSI Meg Z790 Godlike Max, EVGA FTW3 Ultra Gaming 3090, i9-14900KS, 32 GB Corsair Dominator Titanium 7200MT/s CL34, Samsung 990 PRO 1tb SSD, EVGA Supernova G5 850W 80+ Gold
I’ve tried entirely different Windows installs, ranging from Windows 10 22h2 fresh installation before running Windows update and after with no change. I have also run Windows 11 24h2/23h2, both fresh installs, with no differences in performance. I have used DDU in safe mode and clean installed and tried 3 different graphics drivers both being the driver from November and the other being from early December with no change across them, except for Nvidia driver 561.09 as this one doesn’t have crashing issues on Fortnite with nanite enabled, so I have stuck to this one. I’ve monitored my system through HWiNFO and don’t have any thermal throttling flags. Under gaming load, my CPU stays around 50-65c and while running Cinebench R23 temps top around 83c after around 5 minutes; GPU runs around 45-50c. I’ve checked to see if this could be either a ram seating issue or even a GPU seating issues and have cleaned any dust around the area and within the slots out and seated both components back in with no change, I’ve also checked to see if the GPU could be running in a lower PCIe speed state but according to GPU-z and HWiNFO during games it is running at PCIe x16 4.0 16.0 GT/s without changing. GPU limitation flags are “utilization” when in games, with CPU limitation flags being iccmax and Max Turbo Limit (CPU ratio I have set to default intel turbo boost settings).
I have followed several guides to optimize my 14900KS, I have followed buildzoid’s video using an MSI z690 board setting LLC to 3 and MSI lite load to 3 with CEP enabled and disabled with no change as well as trying with and without an -offset. I’ve tried LLC 7 with an ac ll and dc ll of 0.80 I have tried an LLC of 5 with an ac ll of 0.20 and no change in gaming performance. The strange thing to me is that my Cinebench R23 score is 38,000-39,000 and on 3DMark timespy I get a CPU score of 23,000+ with a GPU score of around 20,000 which performs equally to other systems with my specs but the moment I play any game I am straight back to 40–90 fps and stutters with low GPU usage and power draw. I’ve followed a couple guides from buildzoid in regard to overclocking ram, more specifically hynix a-die and tuning secondary timings. I haven’t experienced any BSOD’s or crashes, I’m running the latest current bios version for my motherboard “7D85vA6” with microcode 0x12B and the latest ME firmware version and all other drivers updated. I use the intel default settings, but have also tried with intel performance settings with 320 watts and 400 iccmax, but there wasn’t any change in performance. Furthermore, I’ve tried resetting CMOS and loading optimized defaults, but still suffer with low fps.
CPU usage during gaming: 12-36%. GPU usage during gaming: 30-45%. Video memory usage during gaming: 7-10 GB’s out of 24. RAM usage at maximum when gaming was 24 GB’s. SSD around 4% usage during gaming and temps around 60c, drive is about 50% full.
