I know nobody likes a public breakup, but sometimes it’s necessary…
Dear Spotify,
It came out in the news you’ve been padding your “curated collections” with ghost songs. There’s whispers you’re even messing around with AI-generated works. But I have to confess, I knew it deep down for years now. I just didn’t have the heart to face the truth… so I kept living in your lie. You forgot the things that moved me, or maybe you just didn’t care to play them anymore. Either way, the result was the same.
Do you remember when we would jump wildly between “Hit ‘em Up” and “Wir setzen uns mit Tränen nieder" with reckless abandon? We were lost in the musical passion of the night. And you kept up with me every step of the way. You introduced me to Debussy, you introduced me to Daft Punk. You saw into my very soul and challenged me to go farther. And I loved you for that. But along the way, something began to change. Your moods had become cold and sterile. Instead of playing our old favorites, you began playing vapid and soulless shit generated by nameless and faceless entities. You invited strangers into our bedroom, and asked me to share my life with them in a perverted attempt to “shape my behavior” you sick fuck.
“Ok, Spotify doesn’t want to really please me anymore, I’m a grown man and can take care of myself.” So I made my own folders and lists, and tried to force my own suggestion ques based on particular songs. But it wasn’t the same as before. You started playing the same exact songs over and over again, like you were just going through the royalty motions. You basically turned into a radio station. And I won’t pay a monthly service fee to a fucking radio station anymore.
Apple Music was giving away a 3 month trial. Ordinarily I wouldn’t even think of touching Apple with a ten foot pole, but you pushed me to this point. And I have to admit… last night with Apple Music was incredible. Maybe she didn’t do that fancy “Spotify Connect” thing you do, and maybe she didn’t have a slick UI. But you know what, Spotify? She had heart. She played good music. Her “calm” station was filled with relaxed rock’n’roll and classical because she could already see I loved those things. She didn’t try to cram bullshit elevator music down my ears – not once.
Apple’s sound quality was impressive too. I’m not sure if you were even paying attention when I told you, but I got new speakers recently. They are revealing and honest… and they have not been flattering to you. Well, they were breathtaking with Apple Music last night. She really knew how to make them sing. She even has a standalone classical music app. You turned into a heathen with all that pop music you began consuming. And I won’t even go into detail on that absolute tool of a DJ that… you know what? I’m sorry, nevermind… I don’t mean to rub things in. Let’s keep it simple: it’s over between us.
You played me many songs over the years, so allow me to play this last one for you, via YouTube. I know you and YouTube never got along, but I think he proved to be the better friend after all.
