So my nephew (15) has a gigabyte z170 gaming k3 (rev 1.1) motherboard with an Intel I5 6500k and 16GB RAM.

My younger brother upgraded his pc and gifted him his i7 7700K.

Since I live close to my older brother and work in IT; I figured I would help him swap out the cpu.

I checked that the bios was compatible, it was F23C.

So I shut off the PC and unplugged all the cables, took off the cooler and removed the 6500K.

Slotted on the 7700K, put the cooler back and started it up.

It would continously boot loop. Powering on for 3-5 seconds, then shut down and power on again for a few seconds.

Left it like that for about a minute, but didn’t get any further.

Tried resetting the bios via the jumper and unseating the battery, no luck.

Put the 6500K back in and it would go past post and into the bios.

Strange…

Attempting to go to windows, but now loads with the windows logo for a few seconds and then it bluescreens just before showing the login screen. “inaccessible boot device”, Samsung 830 128GB SSD, so a bit old, but has worked fine for a long time

Not sure what to try now other than reinstalling windows for him, but would really like to get the 7700K working too.

What did I do wrong? What would you recommend for the next step?
