Hey Reddit, looking for some advice on my next upgrade steps and would appreciate some simple explanations!

Here’s what I’m working with: I’ve got a hand-me-down AMD 7950X3D CPU and an ASRock X670E PG Lightning motherboard. For some strange reason, these two don’t seem to play well together. I had them tested individually at a local PC shop, and both passed a 24-hour benchmark test on their own, but when combined, they’re not compatible.

My plan is to use this build mainly for gaming with some light multitasking work (like Google Sheets and financial reports). I also plan to get a 5080 GPU when it’s released (currently using a 1080Ti), so I want my system to be ready for that upgrade. I’m not too experienced with overclocking, but I can follow guides if it’s a matter of copying BIOS settings.

Here are the upgrade options I’m considering:

  1. Upgrade the CPU to a 9800X3D (and maybe sell the 7950X3D) – I’d keep the current motherboard and sell the 7950X3D to recoup some money, as CPUs seem easier to sell. This would mean waiting for the 9800X3D release.
  2. Upgrade the motherboard – I could replace it with something like an ASRock X870E Nova (or any other recommended motherboard) and keep the 7950X3D. This could potentially fix the compatibility issue and future-proof things a bit more.
  3. Upgrade both – I could go all out and upgrade both the CPU and motherboard, though this might be overkill for my needs.

What would you guys suggest, and can you explain it to me in simple terms? Thanks!
