For your info I have a dell optiplex 5050 it has 2 1 gbe ports ( 1 integrated and 1 pcie card )

I’m currently building and converting an existing computer into a promox host. Both are using consumer hardware. With this upgrade I’ve been wanting to upgrade the networking because I’d be using ceph for high availability.

I’ve also read on here that 2.5gbe is not worth upgrading to and just go for 10gbe

I have a few questions about 10gbe.

So I’m going to need to connect my existing 1gbe Ethernet based network into the 10gbe. Would I be able to use a sfp+ to 10gbe Ethernet adapter?

So my computers will be next to each other and I’m stuck with choosing DAC cables or fiber. On eBay if you look up 10gbe sfp+ you can find some for 5$. These seem too good to be true what would be bad about buying these? I’m leaning towards using DAC because I’d have to buy 6 transceivers and fiber.

I’m just now learning about the sfp standard and the difference in transceivers and stuff and it’s quite confusing compared to Ethernet so some help or resources for this would be helpful.

Thanks
