Hello all, I am looking into CPU’s at the mment and consistently see the Ryzen 7 7800X3D recommended as the end-all be-all best CPU for gaming, bar none. What I fail to understand and seem to be having finding an ACTUAL answer for… is why? Part of why I am trying to figure this out is I currently have a Ryzen 9 7950X and have been told numerous times that this CPU, while good, isn’t a *great* CPU for gaming by any means.
Admittedly this frustrates me a bit since this PC is less than a year old and was, I had thought, the best I could ever possibly make it, and if I made a mistake on my CPU choice I would love to figure that out and better understand what makes a CPU especially great for gaming so that I don’t make the same mistake in the future. Any advice is appreciated!
It’s the cache. Simple answer is the cache. That makes a big difference for gaming.
It makes less difference for other tasks, though, while the incredible core count of the 7950x helps with a lot of things. Right now, getting a 7800x3d is tough anyway. I just bought most of a new computer and went for a 9950x which is actually not much more expensive.
I wouldn’t worry about it. If you’re determined that gaming performance is the only thing that matters (or that the core count does you no good–either of these things is certainly reasonable) i would still wait anyway for the 9800x3d. That’s probably going to be out by the end of the year and likely will be a step up… or at least obtainable near MSRP.
Basically, don’t worry about it.
