I’m planning a trip with around 3-4 nights each in Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon. We prefer to avoid flying ‘within’ a trip and try to travel by train where possible. But now that the overnight train from Madrid to Lisbon is no longer running (rip) getting to Portugal in this way feels quite difficult.
I’m looking at options for what could be a roadtrip to take us from Madrid to Lisbon and tick off some good destinations on the way. It could be just a couple days or as long as four or five days if the stops are good enough. I’d like to do this as a way of seeing some beautiful things outside of the big cities, like maybe some more natural or rural sites or some little day hikes and tours, but struggling to choose between the north and the south of Spain, and also a bit intimidated by driving narrow streets in villages to get to our sights etc. I’m also not that interested in beaches (coming from Australia lol)
Where should we consider going to stitch together into this part of a trip?
