What’s the consensus on this show?
I absolutely loved the first episode. It was dripping with atmosphere and mystery, directed with style and care by the wonderful Karyn Kusama. I was absolutely hooked within minutes.
As the first season progressed I felt as though it was spending time with certain plotlines just for the sake of padding out the runtime. But I stuck with it because it still felt confident and there were some genuine standout moments. There were some awkward tonal shifts when the two different timelines switched; namely the very serious 90s setting contrasted with the more light-hearted, quirky tone in the present timeline. This wasn’t a huge issue for me but I will admit I much preferred when the focus was on the younger cast. I wasn’t hugely fond of the cliffhanger-like finale but remained cautiously optimistic.
Season 2 is one of the worst drop-offs in quality I’ve seen in a show. The best description I read was that it turned into a Lost/Desperate Housewives crossover breed. Bizarre tonality shifts that had been creeping up in the first season were on full display here and it really felt like an entirely different show.
How do we all feel about the quality and future of Yellowjackets?
