Really charming film. Wasn’t what I expected, I thought it would be a zany “the inmates are running the asylum” story about a teacher trying to keep the kids in line for Christmas.

I was pleasantly surprised. A bit like when I watched Pig thinking it was “John Wick but Nic Cage and a pig” and wound up really enjoying that one too.

I really hope/think this becomes a Christmas tradition for some people and I could see it becoming one of those films that teachers put on the way they used to put on My Tuesdays With Morrie when they’d wanna show kids an artsy emotional film. I’m probably wildly overestimating its reach on that point though.

Reminds me that Paul Giamatti is one of the most under-appreciated actors working today.

If you like melancholy, tender and heartfelt stories that are just about people going through it, it’s really really worth a watch. I was happy they avoided the trope of the big emotional explosion between the leads and focused on their connection instead, a lot of writers would have done the big argument bit to drive a wedge between the characters but this movie didn’t do that. Random point but wanted to share that.

Huge recommend, one of the rare films that when you say its a 9/10 it really is.
