Yukimi’s voice on Break Me Down may be as light as a feather, but that doesn’t dampen the weight of her proclamations in this tribute to the singer’s resilience. Breaking away from the Little Dragon collective - which was formed in 1996 - for the first time, Yukimi Nagano explores themes of self-affirmation, inner strength, and the divine feminine. Yukimi is undoubtedly the central figure, however, instrumental contributions from bandmate Erik Bodin ensure that the singer needn’t sacrifice the warm, kaleidoscopic production that has been a permanent fixture in her career to express her singularity.

“Don’t put me in a box with the facts you steal/As I break through the wall, as I scream in a hall/As I stand at the top of a peak with the sun in my hands,” Yukimi sings. The lyrics are punchy but Yukimi delivers each line with an impossibly velvety tone, her voice swaying to and fro gently. It is, in fact, the production, led by a marching bass rhythm, that supercharges the track. Bodin wraps his frontwoman’s dulcet vocals in a blanket of hypnotic piano keys and illustrious synths. Every decadent layer he adds accentuates Yukimi’s voice, emboldening it to the point where even the most subtle coo is hard-hitting.
