In the past few years I’ve noticed a marked increase of pop songs and dance songs taking a melody of a famous song and using that same melody to make a new song. New lyrics, etc.

Recent examples include “All In” by YouNotUs & Laurel, which uses the same melody as “All That She Wants” by Ace of Base, and Bebe Rexha’s “I’m Good (Blue)”, which uses the same melody as “I’m Blue” by Eiffel 65.

My question is, what are these? Is there a term for them? Wikipedia simply calls “I’m Good (Blue)” as a “reworking” of the Eiffel 65 track. Is that what you’d say they are, a reworking?

Like if you say “Have you heard Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt?” you could also say “Have you heard Bebe Rexha’s reworking of I’m Blue?”

I feel like this is a very new phenomenon in pop music. I would say they were the exception before the 2020s whereas now they seem to be becoming the norm and not that rare.

Is there an explanation for this trend? Lack of imagination or cashing in on retro nostalgia?

Edit: Interpolation! Thank you reddit. One user says it goes way back, and I’m sure it does, but I still feel in terms of pop music and chart music, we’re hearing a lot more of it than we did a few years ago.
