I often see people worried about power consumption. I’ve honestly never given two thoughts about it so I decided to calculate it for fun. My electrical rates average ~8 cents/kWh in USD. This is how much it costs me to run my PC equipment per month.

2U Server 24/7 - $17.50 per month

1U NAS - 24/7 - $4.10 per month

Router/Switches/APs - 24/7 - $5.80 per month.

High End PC1 - occasional use - $7.80

High End PC2 - occasional use - $6.80

Media PC1 - occasional use - $3.50

Media PC1 - occasional use - $2.00

Garage PC - occasional use - $1.78

Workshop PC - occasional use - $1.55

Total: $51.14

My take: worrying about the cost of power for a home setup isn’t really worth the effort. It’s cheaper than I thought it would be.

What are the electricity rates where you are and do you care about power consumption?
