I’m looking to replace my M2 Macbook Air, the best computer I ever had by a long shot, with a Linux laptop.

I have Linux experience since easily 15 years on and off, actually ever since Linux on the desktop was always gonna be next year ;), so I’m aware that the kind of hardware/software integration that Apple offers is completely unmatchable on Linux.

But hardware I can choose, so I’m looking for a device with:

  • ideally no fan
  • very good all-day battery life (at least)
  • very good hibernation integration with minimal power consumption (the always-on state of the unexhaustable Macbook Air battery is probably its most important user experience feature of the device)
  • small and lightweight, ideally below 13" screen
  • good overall Linux integration; camera etc are basics and should work; I understand that nothing is perfect
  • hi-def screen, so no old devices
  • bonus points for a fingerprint scanner. It might not be widely supported now, but that can change

If I would give up any of these, it would the the fan. I could live with a fan if I can throttle the chips because computing power is not a strong requirement for me.

TLDR: I need an awesome traveling computer as a replacement for the MBAir. I’m weary of everything corporations are doing and want to opt out of the surveillance model, but I’m a sucker for convenience.

p.s: I love the modern Gnome experience as a decades-old MacOS user.
