So, I have been googling around for a bit now, trying to find a solution for this.

I have nginx server on ubuntu that presents a web directory that anyone can download and look at. What I want to do is allow users to go the website, it will show them the web directory with all the links, they can navigate to different levels of the directory. But to actually download a static file they will need to use basic http authentication.

So, in a nutshell, public read only web directory listing, with password protected file download.

Does anyone have any input on how to make this work? I am just not good enough with nginx to know what I am looking for or what to google.
