I’m 37 and looking for a career change to IT and I’m trying to learn as many different things as possible to get an idea of which aspect would most interest me. At first networking and servers didn’t seem interesting until I started working with Linux again, and reading many different forum posts about different things, many of which recommended setting up a homelab especially to get a better understanding of backup, recovery, and update procedures

I have a spare Lenovo ThinkCentre M900 10FH 002AUS lying around that I was wondering if it could be used as the basis for learning and seeing if I am going to be able to invest in more appropriate hardware.

i7-6700 (4C, 3.4 / 4.0GHz, 8MB) 16GB RAM No hard drive currently, but has an M.2 socket which I’m planning on getting in order to keep the only 4 SATA free.

Would this be sufficient for use a learning project to install Proxmox and set up a single NAS drive at first while figuring out and picking up the other equipment that would be needed as I go? I have numerous websites bookmarked with project ideas, but I think starting with learning to set up network storage would be a good introduction.
