I (17F) hosted a sleepover for a few friends yesterday. It was just 5 of us and we were just relaxing before going to sleep. My family and I tend to be late sleepers, so I often stay up late at night. One of my friends there, Jane, is the same so when we all started going to sleep, Jane and I were still feeling wide awake. My two other friends, Sarah and Mia, were already cuddling in the bed in the basement so me, Jane, and a third friend Emily decided to not bother them and go upstairs to the top floor to play a board game.
We were casually playing and it was early morning, around 12AM when Sarah came upstairs and told us to quiet down because she could hear us from down there. We agreed and tried to quiet down a bit but we may have still been a little loud because Sarah came back again half an hour later and asked when we were coming back. I told her we were still not tired so they could rest without us, which she seemed kind of upset about. Emily agreed to go down with them so I stayed up with Jane to finish the board game. We whispered throughout the game and I admit, we got a little loud towards the end because she won and we were hitting each other with pillows while going down the stairs and giggling. When we got down, we saw the other three friends silently on the couch and we immediately stopped. Our friends told us they couldn’t sleep because we were too loud, which Jane and I couldn’t understand because, mind you, we were two floors apart and whispering the entire time. But we apologized to them a few more times and went downstairs with them. Jane and I apologized again, told them we wouldn’t make a single sound, and then went outside so as to not disturb them. Outside, we barely even spoke, just whispering sometimes and looking at the sky by the pool.
At around 2:30 am, we see figures inside and see our three friends at the door so we go meet them there. They tell us that they’re just going to go home to sleep because they can’t sleep here especially since we refuse to go to sleep with them. Sarah also says that when we come in to sleep, we’ll wake them again which will be another issue. Jane explains that we both have insomniac problems so it’s difficult to sleep, which they say it’s fine. Jane tells them we can go to sleep on another floor when we come in so as to not bother them but they say it’s ok and head home. Jane explained that we weren’t trying to bother them at all.
The next morning, I send them an apology text and try to see it from their perspective. Sarah and Mia tell me that they just felt like they were being disrespected since they told us to sleep and that they also felt excluded since Jane and I seemed to be doing our own thing. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal and normally at sleepovers, I would expect others to stay up anyways. Plus, I really did think Jane and I were being quiet so I was genuinely surprised. But after receiving those texts, I’m not sure if maybe the two of us are in the wrong. AITA?
