Canadian phone on a Canadian carrier, freshly updated to iOS 18.3.1. Looks like the correct and proper name is still being used by Apple Maps.

Can we change it to “In-sea-curity”?

Or just “The Sea of Insecurity”?

    Or maybe “Man Baby Bay”

Or “Weak Little Pussy removed President Tiny Hands Dumb Dumb Deep Water Douche Lagoon”

Or, like, “The Gulf of Mexico”…

You’re in the UK? Because other posts suggest you’re American. And that’s what your Apple Maps app looks like to you? Because I just took this screenshot, so I’m doubtful.

And before you say it, I zoomed both in and out.

Not sure what you are trying to achieve here.

I’m not “trying to achieve” anything. Here is Apple Maps in the US.

No I’m not in the UK but I’ve seen UK folks posting it both names (gofa in parentheses). A/B testing and gradual rollouts are also a thing. Don’t get mad at me for Apple and Google’s ridiculous capitulation to the fascists.

I told you it was not like that in the UK and you countered that with a cropped screenshot you claim is from the US version of Apple Maps despite not matching the color or the way it shows a satellite image. My iPhone is from the US and all the apps were downloaded in the US, so that should not be different.

And you’ve now posted the same cropped image twice in a row but are implying you are posting two different images.

I really do not understand what you’re doing here, but it’s weird.

Wtf are you talking about this is Apple Maps. I took the screenshot yesterday. You’re being ridiculous.

It’s cropped because I live on the gulf coast. I am not showing y’all where I fucking live just because you can’t recognize Apple Maps lmao

Switched from Google Maps to Apple Maps a couple months ago, and I’d like to Switch to an alternative that doesn’t implement fascist place names, but navigation with toll road avoidance unfortunately doesn’t seem to be a common feature 😕

Thanks for the recommendation! Can’t remember why I hadn’t tried Organic Maps when testing alternative options, but already glad to see the Gulf of Mexico keeping its proper name. Going on a roadtrip in a few days, so I’ll get a chance to properly test it out then. 👍

I like organic maps but unless you’re in a very major city with a lot of people contributing, the information can frequently be out of date and it is not very good at finding optimal roots (I’m not even talking about the complete lack of traffic data).

It often just looks for the shortest distance between two points which can put you on some wacky paths. Still, if i’m not in a rush/don’t have my kids in the car, I will often use it. It’s a B+ experience which I’m happy to accept for open source/no tracking and selling my data/etc

Since giving up my car and moving to a new city in a new country, the only maps app I have found that gives decent walking directions is Apple Maps. Google and the others do things like skip around footpaths, probably because they base everything on roads meant for cars. That’s my guess anyway.

And then Google Maps is the only one that tends to have the info I actually need. Especially what is open right now since that’s kind of confusing here. Businesses often close much earlier in the UK than they did in the US. So I end up doing things like search Google Maps for a cafe or convenience store that’s still open, then search Apple Maps for the best walking route. And then feel stupid, but I have yet to find a workaround. And I’ve tried.

Any alternative will just be bought up anyway since America decided monopolies are no longer a bad thing.

I don’t see that Apple has a choice here if they want to keep doing business in the U.S.

Trump and Musk have made it pretty clear that you either give in to their petty demands or there will be trouble.

And any company that defies the administration is going to learn really quickly why they shouldn’t.

Part of their whole plan has been to upend the whole corporatist idea that both parties have embraced and turn it into “we are pro-corporate, but only for the right corporate. You scratch our back, we’ll scratch yours.”

Big problem with that, is we’re heading down the V for Vendetta “everyone uses the government controlled phone” path. Apple’s capitulation just adds more weight against their, “hey we’re completely closed-source, but you can totally trust us as the most secure private phone platform because we said so,” narrative.

Not that there’s a real correct-answer way out of this right now. People will just have to leave platforms and do their own thing.

I would suggest that either Apple capitulates and is made part of the system or Apple refuses and is removed from the system. Because if the goal is everyone to use a government controlled phone, it doesn’t really matter if Apple is involved or not.

And expecting any massive corporation to do the thing that will make them less money is to just expect things that never happen.
