I mean it’s a profit engine for the CCP and it has its own rootkit (that people willingly install) in the form of Vanguard AntiCheat as well as that other one being used in the new DeltaForce game.

I mean, I’m old enough to remember Edward Snowden’s PRISM leaks. I can’t rule out that a Chinese-backed software company is functioning comparably to its American counterparts.

It’s just crazy to see how American attitude towards national surveillance has been twisted from “Damn, its bad that the state can spy on me all the time, but if I haven’t done anything wrong there’s probably nothing to worry about” to “It’s important that the people spying on me are Elon Musk and Donald Trump, rather than that evil Xi Jinping.”

“Chinese-backed” is weird phrasing. It’s like saying Ubisoft is US government backed because they have a business license and pay taxes.

Are you actually stupid or are you a troll? Tencent is a Chinese company based on the fact it’s based in China and works with the Chinese government. Ubisoft is a Fench company because it is based in France, not China.

Tencent is a major shareholder in Ubisoft, by your standards, Ubisoft is an arm of the CCP.

The reality you live in must be nice. The CCP is just a peaceful little government trying to live its peaceful little life and bring people peace and happiness.

China is a threat though. Destruction of as many computers as possible is a real threat. CCP members being able to request access to control servers and fire employees that might otherwise refuse is a real threat.

So much of this is automated. You request SSH keys for “a review”, upload a file to the distribution system, it sends it out as an update, and the update waits for the command and control server to say “go” before sending your credit card numbers from Steam to the CCP and bricking your computer. If it ever happens, it will be over before you know what hit you.

I’ll play journalist and link the actual list (PDF). I wondered why Samsung, a company that literally produces military weapons, wasnt on the list. The list is specifically just for Chinese companies. There is apparently a law requiring the Department of Defence maintain and publish this list.

I wondered why Samsung, a company that literally produces military weapons, wasn’t on the list.

Probably because South Korea is a close military ally.

The PDF you linked: Designation of Chinese Military Companies.
      Samsung is Korean.

And while I’m sure the Chinese Government would love to dig out a map from the Han Dynasty, claiming rule over the entire Korean Peninsula, I doubt Samsung is making weapons for them.

Isn’t the South Korean peninsula home to several dozen US military bases?

You don’t need to go all the way back to the Han Dynasty to find the charter that gives US the right to militarily occupy the continent indefinitely. The Truman Doctrine seems sufficient.

I said I wondered why, my dude. Past tense. As in “I initially wondered why Samsung wasn’t on the list, so I looked up the list, and saw it’s only for Chinese companies.”

I am always reminded how precise and verbose one must be in text since it’s so easy to intend one meaning but have people interpret another.

Seriously! I know that BLUF is a thing but do that many people seriously not read past the first line before feeling the need to correct someone on the internet? @[email protected] as a fellow member of the human race let me formally thank you for forming a question, seeking out information that either confirms or denies your question, and informing everyone else who may have had the same misconception.

A note for history: this was just a little before America officially went the rest of the way nuts on jan 20 2024.
