The now-dead plan was for people to pay a monthly fee to get a new iPhone every year.
Not new, or abandoned… https://www.apple.com/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program
Isn’t this what mobile service providers do in America/US already? Contract that includes both the SIM and data/calls/minutes and the telephone on credit? Wacky either way 😂
I think the difference here is you’d never own the phone. Stop your subscription and lose your phone. Most combined deals end up with you eventually owning the phone
You never own an iPhone, regardless of how you purchase or rent it. Try repairing it, try installing software outside of Apple’s control on it, try to turn off features you don’t like/want. You don’t own any Apple product, you use them and you’re at the mercy of Apple.
TIL. I never had a contract handset so never knew ngl
They have both options in Canada, it’s basically lease vs. loan. They really push the lease option these days, though.
Given that a smartphone will remain in good working order, and reasonably current in terms of tech, for 2-3 years, you’d have to be a bit of a mug to pay this.
And I’m pretty rough on my tech, I imagine most people would do far better than that.
My last iPhone lasted more than six years hahaha
I didn’t even need to upgrade, but I wanted 120hz, USB-C, and better cat pics in low light. I did not realize how big of a difference it would be for cat pix. It’s wild that I don’t have to charge it every night, too!
Did you replace the battery at any point?
Nope! Original battery!

Huh? I guess the current model is, via a bank? And this rumor is that Apple would be the bank? Who cares?
