Glad I took the plunge and installed mint linux, hasn’t been installed that long and I still use windows 10 for now. Still trying to get everything working, but yeah windows is going away if I have anything to say about it.
Made the same move myself. Honestly was expecting it to be much more effort than it was. Happy with how everything has gone so far.
I was very surprised how smooth it actually is as well. I was not clear how Wine works for nom-Steam games but once I learned about Heroic launcher and Lutris it was pretty much smooth sailing so far.
I thought I will use Linux every now and then, instead I never booted Windows ever since installing Mint.
Same here. Switched over to mint as my main driver about 3 months ago. I keep a win 10 installation in order to play one game. If windows tries to mess with my dual boot, I’ll boot windows out the door. I don’t need to pay that game that bad…
Edit: spelling is hard
Out of sheer noseyness what game is it that’s stuck on windows
Probably fortnight or rocket league if I were guessing.
RL works perfectly on linux. i play every now and then on mint.
Also could be Destiny, it runs but they ban you. Many multiplayer games don’t run or get you banned on linux just due to the DRM, it’s partially the companies’ fault for not supporting it, but mainly it’s that no linux user is installing a fucking rootkit DRM just to play Fortnite.
I dual booted for ages between random Linux installs and windows because of a couple games.
The only way I found that windows wouldn’t fuck with the bootloader was to keep windows on a separate drive.
I had a dual boot going for six weeks this summer, but Mint had a lot of incompatibility issues with my Nvidia setup. I did love Mint, though, just not having to troubleshoot almost every time I booted up my PC.
I’m going to upgrade to a new PC later this year, and when I do, I’m going to do a dedicated Linux install on my old PC with a different distro and use the new one only for gaming.
I had a similar issue with my Mint installation earlier this year as well. I have a 2080Ti, and the default drivers and the drivers I kept getting prompted to install would always cause my resolution to be potato quality. I never did figure out how to squash that.
For me I just figured it was an unfortunate hardware incompatibility, but there are other distros that are specifically built around Nvidia compatibility, so I’ll pick one of those when I make the switch.
default is open source nouveau driver, and it’s indeed bad. i use proprietary ones and i get them by searching from the software center for “nvidia driver” and just pick the newest one. i have 3060 ti and for a long time mint was the only distro that did not give me any issues. since version 550 i can use other distros too without any problems.
I appreciate that. I’m definitely going to try again soon.
I installed Mint this past spring and fiddled around with it briefly every once in a while but I’m not a tech guy so there was a little bit of a learning curve on stuff like getting a second monitor to work, stuff like that. I’m sure you’ve already found out that there’s TONS of documentation and forums for questions, it’s just a matter of feeling kinda dumb for a little while as you troubleshoot. I switched over to Mint full time a few months ago and haven’t looked back. I’ve still got Win10 on an extra hard drive just in case but I think more and more of reclaiming that space for Steam now, I don’t miss Windows at all
Obligatory Reminder: O&O ShutUp is a thing and helps keep MS out of your data.
Just want to add this alongside yours:
Winutils includes O&O in the box alongside a plethora of other options.
At this point installing win11 is a bug that can be easily fixed by installing anything from Linux to BSD to even something as incomplete and not meant for use as a daily driver as AROS at this point.
Haiku
Microsoft claims bug
Recall uninstall option
Windows eleven glitch
I wish it was usable enough… loved BeOS and I really hope to have Haiku as my daily driver one day
I was surprised how usable HaikuOS is as a daily driver.
Not practical for most people, but still more capable than I had expected.
How is this oniony? This is par for the course with current Microsoft leadership.
Well, compare this to 2009 Microsoft. Their downfall itself is oniony.
Creepy
Every so often I wonder why I still use windows. And then I realize it’s easier to debloate windows than it is to emulate windows software on wine.
wine program.exe
wow scary.
This point was true back in 2017.
Today you just do a: add non steam game, compatibility, ge Proton. And run.
Alternatively Bottles.
